Cuándo usar Other y Another en inglés

En inglés, tanto «other» como «another» se utilizan para referirse a algo que es adicional o diferente.

Esta es la principal diferencia entre Another y Other para tener en cuenta:

Other

Se utiliza para hacer referencia a una cosa o persona adicional en un grupo o conjunto.

También se usa cuando se desea expresar que algo o alguien es diferente o distinto de lo mencionado anteriormente.

Por ejemplo:

  • «I have two cats. One is black, and the other is white.» (Tengo dos gatos. Uno es negro y el otro es blanco.)
  • «I have some books. Can I see your other books as well?» (Tengo algunos libros. ¿Puedo ver tus otros libros también?)

Another

En este caso, lo usamos cuando nos referimos a una cosa o persona adicional pero de manera singular (no plural).

Asimismo, se utiliza cuando se desea expresar que algo es uno más en una serie o conjunto pero con la particularidad de que es similar.

Por ejemplo:

    • «I already have a book, but I would like to buy another one.» (Ya tengo un libro, pero me gustaría comprar otro.)
    • «This pizza is delicious. Can I have another slice?» (Esta pizza está deliciosa. ¿Puedo tomar otra rebanada?)

Adicionalmente, es importante tener en cuenta el contexto para cada uno de los casos, ya que esto marca la pauta para elegir entre las dos alternativas.
